In the lore, Maksukerran arose in the 13th century as a trading hub after capturing a strategic harbor. It expanded through shipbuilding, spice trade, and a robust naval presence, maintaining independence through alliances with neighboring states and a reputation for skilled diplomacy.

Today Maksukerran’s economy centers on the port, shipyards, and guild halls. Major exports include timber, spices, metalwork, and textiles, while imports bring grain and ceramics. The harbor features a breakwater system and a network of canals within the historic quarter, facilitating movement of goods and people.

The population is diverse, with Valoran, Meridi, and Varic influences reflected in language, architecture, and customs. Local languages include Maksukerran Varic alongside a merchant creole used in markets. The Tide Festival celebrates the sea and trade, while public theaters and scholarly guilds contribute to the city’s cultural life.
