Maksapesäkkeet, also known as hepatic abscesses, are collections of pus within the liver. They can be caused by bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections. The most common route of infection is through the bloodstream from other parts of the body, such as the gastrointestinal tract or biliary system. Less commonly, direct spread from nearby infections or trauma to the liver can also lead to abscess formation.

Symptoms of a hepatic abscess can vary but often include fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea, and vomiting. The severity of symptoms depends on the size and location of the abscess, as well as the overall health of the individual. Diagnosis is typically made through imaging studies such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scan, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Blood tests may also reveal signs of infection.

Treatment for hepatic abscesses usually involves antibiotics to combat the infection and drainage of the pus. Drainage can be achieved through percutaneous aspiration (using a needle and syringe) or surgical intervention. The choice of treatment depends on the characteristics of the abscess, including its size, number, and the patient's clinical condition. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to prevent complications such as sepsis, rupture of the abscess, or spread of the infection to other organs.
