Maitoquartz is a mineraloid substance that exhibits properties of both maito, a type of algae, and quartz. It is not a recognized mineral by the International Mineralogical Association, and its existence is primarily discussed in speculative or fictional contexts. The term "maitoquartz" suggests a composite material where organic algae structures are somehow integrated or replaced by silicon dioxide, the primary component of quartz.

The theoretical concept of maitoquartz often arises in discussions of biomineralization or hypothetical geological processes. It imagines a scenario where the intricate three-dimensional framework of certain algae species could act as a template for the deposition of silica. Over geological timescales, this process could potentially lead to the formation of a fossilized or petrified material that retains the delicate cellular patterns of the original alga but possesses the hardness and crystalline structure of quartz.

While actual maitoquartz has not been scientifically documented, similar biogenic silica formations are known. Diatoms, for instance, create intricate glassy shells called frustules made of silica, and these can accumulate and fossilize.
