The Mahajanapadas were sixteen large kingdoms or republics in ancient India, that flourished in the period between 600 BCE and 300 BCE. These Janapadas emerged as significant territorial states with developed political structures and economies. The exact list of these Mahajanapadas can vary slightly between different Buddhist and Jain texts, but they are generally considered to be Kashi, Kosala, Anga, Magadha, Vajji, Malla, Chedi, Vatsa, Kuru, Panchala, Matsya, Shurasena, Ashmaka, Avanti, Gandhara, and Kamboja.
