Mahad

Mahad is a city located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the banks of the Savitri River, approximately 100 kilometers south of Mumbai. Historically, Mahad has been an important trading center and a significant location in the Indian independence movement.

The city is known for its historical significance, particularly its role in the Mahad Satyagraha, a pivotal event in the fight against untouchability led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in 1927. This protest challenged the discrimination against Dalits, asserting their right to use public water sources. The Chowdar Tank, where the Satyagraha took place, is a protected monument and a place of pilgrimage for many.

Mahad also holds religious importance with several temples and mosques. The Varadvinayak Temple, one of the Ashtavinayak temples (eight revered Ganesh temples), is located in Mahad, attracting devotees from across Maharashtra. The city's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with nearby areas cultivating rice, mangoes, and cashews. Industrial development is also present, with some manufacturing units.
