Magyarország, commonly known as Hungary in English, is a landlocked country located in Central Europe. It is situated in the Pannonian Basin and shares its borders with Slovakia to the north, Ukraine to the northeast, Romania to the east and southeast, Serbia to the south, Croatia and Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west. The capital and largest city is Budapest, formed by the unification of Buda, Óbuda, and Pest.

Hungary's history is rich and complex, stretching back over a thousand years to the arrival of the Magyars. It was established as a kingdom in the year 1000 by King Stephen I. Over centuries, the country experienced periods of great power and expansion, as well as significant challenges, including Ottoman occupation and Habsburg rule. Hungary played a role in the Austro-Hungarian Empire until its dissolution after World War I. The 20th century saw Hungary endure World War II, followed by decades under Soviet influence and communist rule, culminating in the revolution of 1956 and the transition to a democratic republic in 1989.

The country's landscape is characterized by rolling plains, particularly the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) to the east, and is traversed by major rivers like the Danube and the Tisza. Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, is a significant natural feature and tourist destination. Hungary has a temperate continental climate. The official language is Hungarian, a Uralic language unrelated to most other European languages. The currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO. Its economy is a mixed market economy, with significant sectors including automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.
