Magmens

Magmens are a fictional class of mineral described in speculative geoscience and science fiction. They are defined by crystalline ferrimagnetic oxides with unusually high magnetic remanence at room temperature and are typically imagined within basaltic and ultramafic rock contexts.

Chemically, magmens are modeled as spinel-like oxides with a general composition of (Fe,Mg,Mn)3O4. Substitutions of magnesium and manganese for iron are common, and trace elements such as titanium, chromium, and aluminum may occur, affecting magnetic properties.

Physically, magmens are metallic-luster minerals that range from dark gray to black. They have Mohs hardness around 6.5 to 7, a density near 5.0 to 5.6 g/cm3, and exhibit strong magnetic permeability. They retain magnetization after external fields are removed; Curie temperatures vary by composition, generally well above ambient conditions in fiction.

Occurrences are described as forming during late-stage crystallization of basaltic magmas in reducing pockets or via hydrothermal processes in imagined plate settings. In many depictions, magmens crystallize as short prismatic crystals up to a few centimeters and occur in veins or disseminations.

Origin of the name is commonly linked to magnetism and metal, with early-fictional accounts crediting a 20th-century geologist naming them for their magnetic character. They are treated as a rare but valuable resource in speculative geology narratives.

Applications in fiction include magnetic energy storage, sensitive sensors, and calibrants for instruments. Because of rarity and specialized processing requirements, magmens are typically described as not suitable for mass mining, though occasional experimental lots appear in plot devices.
