Maglevteknologiaan refers to magnetic levitation technology, a system of transportation that uses magnetic forces to levitate a vehicle above a track. This levitation eliminates friction between the vehicle and the surface, allowing for very high speeds and a smooth ride. The core principle involves powerful electromagnets or permanent magnets to repel or attract the vehicle and the guideway.

There are several types of maglev systems. Electrodynamic Suspension (EDS) systems typically use superconducting magnets on the vehicle that induce currents in coils on the guideway, creating a repulsive force. Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS) systems use electromagnets on the vehicle that are attracted to ferromagnetic rails on the guideway, requiring precise control to maintain a stable gap.

Maglev technology offers several advantages, including high speed, reduced noise pollution compared to conventional trains, and lower energy consumption at high speeds due to the absence of rolling resistance. However, the initial construction costs for maglev systems are significantly higher than for traditional rail infrastructure. The development and implementation of maglev have seen significant investment and research in countries like China, Japan, and Germany, with operational lines in Shanghai and planned projects elsewhere. Challenges include the need for dedicated, specialized infrastructure and the complexity of magnetic field management.
