Magisteriõpe

Magisteriõpe is the Estonian term for master’s studies, the second cycle of higher education in Estonia that follows the bachelor’s degree. It is part of the European higher education area and the Bologna Process, and it leads to a master’s degree (magistrikraad) in the relevant field. Magisteriõpe is offered by universities and, where available, professional higher education institutions across disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business, and arts.

Structure and duration: most programs are designed for full-time study of about two years, commonly awarding 120 ECTS credits, though some fields or part-time forms may use 60–120 ECTS over a longer period. The curriculum typically combines advanced coursework with a substantial independent research component, often a master’s thesis or final project that must be completed and defended or assessed.

Admission: entry usually requires a completed bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and programs may set additional requirements such as language proficiency (Estonian or English), entrance tests, portfolios, or interviews depending on the specialization.

Outcomes: successful completion results in a magistrikraad (master’s degree). Graduates may pursue doctoral studies or enter professional practice, depending on the program. Magisteriõpe thus serves both academic and professional aims and remains a core element of Estonia’s higher education system.
