Mafiques

Mafiques are organized crime groups that operate as structured, ongoing enterprises focused on illicit profit and social control. They typically rely on hierarchical leadership, specialized roles, ritualized loyalty, and a code of silence to sustain criminal activity across generations. While there is no single template, mafias commonly combine illegal markets, violence, corruption, and legitimate front businesses to shield operations from law enforcement and to extend influence into political and economic life.

Historically associated with Italian criminal traditions such as the Sicilian Mafia and its Italian-American successors, mafias emerged in contexts of weak state authority and economic marginalization. Over the 20th century similar groups appeared worldwide in the Balkans, Russia, Latin America, and parts of Asia and Africa. The term is used broadly to describe distinct organizations that share secrecy, loyalty, and enterprise-driven structures.

Activities and structure: Mafias engage in extortion, racketeering, drug and arms trafficking, money laundering, illegal gambling, human trafficking, and smuggling. They control labor and legitimate businesses through intimidation or corruption, and use violence to enforce discipline and settle disputes. Organization varies by context, from tightly controlled clans to looser networks; leadership is often linked by kinship or longstanding ties, with enforcers, negotiators, and administrators.

Impact and law enforcement: Governments pursue anti-mafia measures including targeted legislation, asset seizure, witness protection, and international cooperation. Mafias can distort markets, undermine governance, and fuel violence, though in some communities they also contribute to informal economies and social order in the absence of strong state services. Transnational activities, money laundering networks, and modernization challenges continue to shape their operations.
