M Maasähkövirtoja, known in English as telluric currents, are electrical currents that flow within the Earth's crust and mantle. These currents are naturally occurring and are primarily induced by the interaction of the Earth's magnetic field with solar wind. The constantly changing magnetic field of the Earth, which is influenced by solar activity, generates electric fields within the conductive layers of the planet. These electric fields, in turn, drive the flow of telluric currents.

The strength and pattern of telluric currents vary significantly depending on geographical location, time of day, and solar activity. They are generally stronger at higher latitudes and during periods of intense geomagnetic storms. These currents can be detected and measured using sensitive instruments such as magnetometers and electric field sensors placed on the Earth's surface.

Telluric currents have several practical implications. They can induce currents in long metallic structures like pipelines, railway lines, and power transmission cables, potentially leading to corrosion or interference with electrical systems. In geophysics, the study of telluric currents, known as geomagnetism or tellurics, is used to understand the Earth's subsurface conductivity structure, which can provide insights into geological formations, mineral deposits, and tectonic activity. Researchers also study them to better understand the dynamics of the Earth's magnetosphere and its interaction with space weather.
