Maastopyöräkilpailut, also known as mountain bike racing, is a competitive cycling discipline that takes place on off-road terrain. These races are characterized by their challenging courses, which often include dirt paths, rocky sections, roots, steep climbs, and technical descents. The sport tests a rider's physical endurance, bike handling skills, and strategic thinking.

There are several distinct disciplines within maastopyöräkilpailut, each with its own rules and course formats. Cross-country (XC) is the most popular and widely recognized format. XC races can range from short track events with laps on a compact course to Olympic-style cross-country (XCO) which features a longer loop with a variety of natural and man-made obstacles. Another discipline is downhill (DH), where riders race individually against the clock down a steep, technical course. Enduro racing combines elements of both cross-country and downhill, with riders completing multiple timed downhill stages connected by untimed uphill or flat transfer sections. Other formats include marathon, four-cross (4X), and e-MTB racing.

Maastopyöräkilpailut events are held globally, from local amateur races to international championships like the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. Riders typically use specialized mountain bikes designed for durability and performance on rough terrain, featuring suspension systems and robust frames. The sport requires significant training and preparation to navigate the demanding courses safely and efficiently.
