Maaperäluokitukset refer to systems used to classify soils based on their physical and chemical properties. These classifications are crucial for various applications, including agriculture, construction, environmental management, and land-use planning. Different classification systems exist, each with its own criteria and hierarchical structure.

One of the most widely used systems globally is the USDA Soil Taxonomy, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture. It categorizes soils into orders, suborders, great groups, subgroups, families, and series, based on factors like soil horizon development, texture, mineralogy, and moisture regimes. Another prominent system is the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB), developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The WRB aims for international harmonization and uses reference soil groups, qualifiers, and other descriptive terms.

In Finland, national soil classification systems are also employed, often tailored to specific local conditions and needs. These may incorporate elements from international systems but also include distinct categories relevant to Finnish geology and climate. For instance, classifications might focus on the origin of soil material (e.g., moraine, glaciofluvial deposits), particle size distribution (e.g., sand, silt, clay), or moisture content.
