Maanorial

Maanorial refers to a system of landholding and social organization prevalent in medieval Europe and other parts of the world. It was characterized by a lord who owned land and a manor, and peasants who worked the land in exchange for protection and a place to live. The manor was largely self-sufficient, providing for the needs of its inhabitants through agricultural production and artisanal crafts.

The lord held various rights and responsibilities. He was expected to provide justice, military protection, and a degree of economic stability to his tenants. In return, peasants owed him labor services, rents paid in produce or money, and other dues. Social hierarchy was rigid, with the lord at the apex, followed by free peasants and then serfs, who were tied to the land. The manor court was the primary judicial body, dealing with local disputes and enforcing manorial customs. This system fostered a localized economy and a strong sense of community within each manor, though interactions between manors could be limited. The decline of manorialism was a gradual process, influenced by factors such as the growth of towns, the rise of a money economy, and changing labor demands.
