Maanalämmönsiirtoyksikkö, often abbreviated as MLTU, is a device used for transferring heat energy from the ground for heating and cooling purposes. These units are a key component in geothermal heating and cooling systems, also known as ground-source heat pump systems. The basic principle involves utilizing the stable temperature of the earth below the frost line to exchange heat. In the summer, the MLTU helps dissipate heat from a building into the ground, while in the winter, it extracts heat from the ground to warm the building.

The MLTU typically consists of a heat exchanger, a circulation pump, and control systems. The heat exchanger is where the thermal energy transfer occurs between the ground loop and the building's heating and cooling system. The ground loop itself is a network of pipes buried underground, through which a fluid, usually a mixture of water and antifreeze, circulates. As this fluid flows through the ground, it either absorbs heat from the warmer earth or releases heat to the cooler earth. The circulation pump is responsible for moving this fluid through the loop and the heat exchanger. The control systems regulate the operation of the MLTU, ensuring efficient temperature management and energy transfer based on the building's demands.
