The game features 32 characters from the Mario universe, including new additions like Honey Queen and Metal Mario, alongside returning favorites such as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach. It includes 16 tracks across eight cups, with each cup containing both new and retro courses from previous Mario Kart games. Notable new tracks include Sherbet Land and Shy Guy Bazaar, while classic courses like Mario Circuit and Donut Plains 3 were redesigned for the 3DS.

MK7 introduced gliding mechanics, allowing players to soar through the air after jumping from ramps, adding a new strategic layer to racing.
