MIDIviestejä, often translated as MIDI messages, are the fundamental units of data used in the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) standard. MIDI itself is a technical standard that describes a protocol, digital interface, and connectors, and communicates electronic musical instruments, computers, and related audio devices for playing, editing, and recording music. MIDI messages do not carry audio signals; instead, they convey event messages such as musical notes being turned on or off, pitch bends, vibrato, panning, volume, and other control signals.

There are several types of MIDI messages. Note On messages indicate that a specific musical note has been pressed on a MIDI controller, specifying the note number and velocity (how hard the note was pressed). Note Off messages signal the release of a note. Control Change (CC) messages are used to control various parameters of a synthesizer or effect, such as modulation wheel, volume, or pan. Program Change messages select different instrument sounds or patches on a MIDI device. System Exclusive (SysEx) messages are used for manufacturer-specific data and can be more complex.

These messages are transmitted sequentially over a MIDI cable or wirelessly. A MIDI device receives these messages and interprets them to generate sound or control other connected devices. The timing and sequence of these messages are crucial for accurate musical reproduction. Understanding MIDI messages is essential for anyone working with digital music production, sequencing, and controlling electronic musical instruments.
