MCXVI

MCXVI (1016 CE) was a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year starting on Thursday of the Julian calendar. It is best remembered for its political and military events in medieval Europe, particularly in England, as well as for significant occurrences in Asia and Africa.

In England, the year was marked by the death of King Æthelred the Unready on May 3, 1016, which precipitated a succession crisis. His son Edward the Confessor was a nominal claimant, but the Danish king Sweyn I (Sweyn Forkbeard) seized the English throne in late summer after defeating Æthelred’s forces at the Battle of Assandun on October 25.
