MCV2

MCV2 refers to the second dose in a meningococcal conjugate vaccine program. It provides protection against invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y. As a booster or second dose, MCV2 aims to extend and reinforce immunity established by the first dose.

In many national immunization schedules, MCV2 is given as part of a two-dose meningococcal vaccination strategy. The exact timing varies by country. For example, in the United States the usual pattern is a first dose of a meningococcal conjugate vaccine around ages 11–12, followed by a booster around age 16; the latter dose is commonly designated MCV2. Some catch-up or alternative schedules label a second dose as MCV2 for individuals who did not complete the primary series.

Administration is by intramuscular injection, typically in the deltoid muscle. Dosing and brand choices (such as Menactra or Menveo) may differ by jurisdiction. The goal of MCV2 is to enhance the duration of protection, particularly for adolescents and others at heightened risk for meningococcal disease.

Safety and effectiveness: MCV2 contributes to reduced risk of invasive disease caused by the covered serogroups. Common side effects include pain at the injection site, redness, fever, and fatigue; serious adverse events are rare. Contraindications include a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to a vaccine component, with precaution advised for moderate or severe acute illness.

MCV2 is part of the broader meningococcal vaccination strategy, alongside other MenACWY and MenB vaccines.
