Mõõtmisvigu are deviations between a measured value and the true value of a quantity. Understanding and quantifying these errors is crucial for accurate scientific research and practical applications.

There are several types of measurement errors. Systematic errors consistently affect measurements in the same direction, either increasing or decreasing them. These can arise from faulty instruments, calibration issues, or consistent environmental conditions. For example, a thermometer that consistently reads 1 degree Celsius too high is exhibiting a systematic error. Random errors, on the other hand, fluctuate unpredictably and can occur in any direction. They are often due to limitations in the precision of the measuring instrument or variations in the measurement process itself, such as slight changes in hand steadiness when using a ruler.

Another important concept is gross errors, which are significant mistakes made during the measurement process, such as misreading an instrument or incorrect recording of data. These are usually identifiable and can often be corrected or the measurement can be repeated.

The quantification of measurement errors is often expressed in terms of uncertainty. Uncertainty provides a range within which the true value of the measured quantity is expected to lie. This is typically expressed alongside the measured value, for instance, as 10.5 ± 0.2 cm. Various statistical methods are employed to estimate and propagate these uncertainties through calculations. The goal in any measurement is to minimize errors and accurately represent the uncertainty associated with the result.
