Méheüreg

Méheüreg is a Hungarian term that translates to "bee space" in English. It refers to the specific gap, typically between 3/8 of an inch and 3/16 of an inch (approximately 9.5 mm to 4.8 mm), that honeybees consistently leave when building their combs. This precise spacing is crucial for their behavior and the management of bee colonies, particularly in modern beekeeping.

If the space is too narrow, bees will fill it with propolis, a sticky resinous substance they collect from trees and plants. If the space is too wide, they will build additional combs or fill the gap with extra honey and pollen. This natural tendency of bees to maintain a consistent gap is the foundation of movable-frame beekeeping as developed by Lorenzo Langstroth. Langstroth observed this phenomenon and designed beehive boxes with frames spaced at the appropriate bee space, allowing beekeepers to easily remove and inspect individual frames without damaging the comb or provoking the bees.

The concept of bee space is fundamental to understanding how bees organize their hives and is a key principle for beekeepers aiming to manage their colonies efficiently and humanely. It allows for the easy inspection of the queen, brood, and honey stores, as well as the harvesting of honey. Without the understanding and application of bee space, modern beekeeping practices would not be possible.
