Märkäkuivaimureita, known in English as wet vacuum cleaners or wet-dry vacuums, are versatile cleaning devices capable of both picking up dry debris and liquids. Unlike standard vacuum cleaners that are designed solely for dry dust and dirt, wet-dry vacuums have a special construction that allows them to safely handle water and other liquids. This is achieved through a collection tank that separates the motor from the liquid being suctioned.

The typical operation of a märkäkuivain involves a motor that creates suction, drawing material into a hose and then into a collection tank. For dry vacuuming, a filter is usually in place to prevent dust from re-entering the air. When switching to wet vacuuming, this filter is often removed or replaced with a foam barrier to protect the motor from moisture. The collected liquid can then be easily emptied from the tank.

These devices find use in a variety of settings. Domestically, they are useful for cleaning up spills, flooded areas, or pet accidents. In workshops, garages, and industrial environments, they are employed for cleaning up sawdust, metal shavings, oil, and other messes. Their dual functionality makes them a practical tool for a wide range of cleaning tasks where both dry and wet debris are present. Some models also offer blower functions, further increasing their utility.
