Løkkeutveksling

Løkkeutveksling (also known as locking and linking) is a transportation concept developed in the 1920s by Norwegian engineer Torvald Mørch. The idea revolves around the interchange of trains and locomotives between different railway routes, allowing for seamless and efficient transportation of passengers and cargo.

This system involves the creation of specialized tracks and switches, enabling trains to be transferred from one route to another without the need for a physical change of train or locomotive. The tracks' unique locking mechanism allows for precise control over the transfer process, ensuring that trains are securely attached and detached from each other.

Løkkeutveksling was initially implemented on the Norwegian State Railways network, particularly in the western part of the country. The system was used for both passenger and freight services, with trains being transferred at designated junction points. This facilitated faster travel times, reduced delays, and improved overall network efficiency.

Although it has seen limited adoption outside of Norway, løkkeutveksling remains an innovative solution to the challenges associated with conventional train transfer methods.
