Líkamshita

Líkamshita is an Icelandic term that translates to "body heat" or "body temperature." It refers to the internal temperature of a living organism, specifically a human in most contexts. Maintaining a stable body temperature is crucial for the proper functioning of biological processes. In humans, the average body temperature is typically around 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), although this can fluctuate slightly due to factors such as time of day, physical activity, and individual metabolism.

The regulation of body temperature, known as thermoregulation, is a complex physiological process controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain. When the body's temperature deviates from its set point, the hypothalamus initiates responses to either generate heat or dissipate it. For instance, shivering increases muscle activity to produce heat, while sweating helps cool the body by evaporation.
