Lågtemperatursterilisering refers to a group of sterilization methods that operate at temperatures below the boiling point of water, typically between 40°C and 60°C. These methods are employed for heat-sensitive materials and medical devices that cannot withstand traditional high-temperature sterilization like autoclaving.

Several techniques fall under low-temperature sterilization. Ethylene oxide (EtO) gas sterilization is a widely used method for heat-sensitive equipment, effectively killing microorganisms by alkylating their cellular components. However, EtO requires strict aeration periods to remove toxic residues. Vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) is another common low-temperature method that utilizes hydrogen peroxide vapor to sterilize. It is considered a safer alternative to EtO due to its faster cycle times and lack of toxic byproducts, as it breaks down into water and oxygen. Other methods include peracetic acid sterilization and plasma sterilization, where ionized gas is used to achieve sterilization.

The choice of low-temperature sterilization method depends on factors such as the material being sterilized, the type of contamination, and the required processing time. Proper validation and monitoring are crucial to ensure the effectiveness and safety of any low-temperature sterilization process.
