Lääketutkimukset, known in English as medical research or clinical trials, are systematic investigations designed to evaluate medical interventions in humans. These studies aim to determine the safety and efficacy of new drugs, devices, or procedures, and to identify optimal ways to use existing ones. Lääketutkimukset are a critical component of medical advancement, providing the evidence needed to improve patient care and public health. They are conducted in phases, each with specific objectives. Phase I trials typically involve a small group of healthy volunteers to assess safety and dosage. Phase II trials expand to a larger group of patients with the condition being studied to evaluate efficacy and further assess safety. Phase III trials involve a much larger and more diverse patient population to confirm efficacy, monitor side effects, and compare the intervention to standard treatments. If successful, the intervention may then be approved for wider use. Phase IV trials, also known as post-marketing surveillance, occur after an intervention is approved and marketed, continuing to monitor safety and effectiveness in the general population. Lääketutkimukset are rigorously regulated to protect the rights and well-being of participants, with oversight from ethics committees and regulatory authorities. Participation is voluntary, and informed consent is a cornerstone of the process.
