Läsnäoloanturit, known in English as presence sensors, are devices designed to detect the presence or absence of a person or object in a specific area. They are widely used in various applications, from building automation to security systems and consumer electronics. The fundamental principle behind most läsnäoloanturit is the emission and detection of a signal that is altered by the presence of something within its field of detection.

There are several common types of läsnäoloanturit. Passive infrared (PIR) sensors detect infrared radiation emitted by warm bodies, such as humans and animals. When a warm object moves within the sensor's view, it changes the amount of infrared radiation reaching the sensor, triggering a detection. Ultrasonic sensors emit high-frequency sound waves and measure the time it takes for these waves to reflect off an object and return. The change in the echo pattern indicates the presence of an object. Microwave sensors operate similarly by emitting microwave signals and detecting changes in the reflected waves caused by movement.

Capacitive sensors detect changes in capacitance, which can be caused by the presence of a conductive or dielectric object nearby. These are often used for touch-sensitive interfaces but can also be configured for presence detection. Another type is the optical sensor, which uses light beams. When an object breaks or reflects the light beam, it is detected.
