Lämpötilavälineillä, often translated as "temperature instruments" or "thermometric devices," refers to a range of tools and apparatus used for measuring temperature. These instruments are fundamental in various scientific, industrial, and everyday applications, providing essential data for monitoring, control, and analysis.

The principle behind most temperature instruments is the thermometric property, which is a physical property of a substance that changes predictably with temperature. Common thermometric properties include volume, pressure, electrical resistance, and thermal radiation. Different types of instruments exploit these properties. For example, liquid-in-glass thermometers, like the familiar mercury or alcohol thermometers, rely on the thermal expansion of a liquid. Bimetallic thermometers use the differential expansion of two different metals bonded together.

Electrical temperature sensors are widely used due to their accuracy and versatility. Thermocouples generate a voltage proportional to the temperature difference between two dissimilar metal junctions. Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) change their electrical resistance with temperature, with platinum being a common material for RTDs. Thermistors are semiconductor devices whose resistance changes significantly with temperature, often exhibiting a non-linear relationship. Infrared thermometers measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object, allowing for non-contact temperature measurements. The selection of a specific temperature instrument depends on factors such as the required accuracy, temperature range, response time, and environmental conditions.
