Lämpötilakontaktit, known in English as temperature contacts or thermal contacts, are devices designed to detect and indicate specific temperature thresholds. They are fundamentally switches that open or close an electrical circuit based on the ambient temperature. These devices are crucial for safety systems, control applications, and monitoring processes where exceeding or falling below a certain temperature can have significant consequences.

The operation of a lämpötilakontakti relies on the thermal expansion or contraction of a material. A common type utilizes a bimetallic strip. This strip is made of two different metals with varying coefficients of thermal expansion bonded together. As the temperature changes, one metal expands or contracts more than the other, causing the strip to bend. This bending motion is then used to actuate a mechanical switch, either closing or opening a circuit. Other designs might employ liquid-filled capsules or semiconductor-based sensing elements.

In domestic settings, they are used in thermostats for heating and cooling systems, as well as in safety devices like oven overheat protection.
