Lämpöpitoisuuden

Lämpöpitoisuuden, often translated as heat capacity, is a fundamental thermodynamic property of a substance. It quantifies the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of a given amount of that substance by one degree Celsius or Kelvin. Essentially, it tells us how resistant a material is to temperature changes when heat is added or removed.

The concept of heat capacity is crucial in understanding energy transfer in various physical and chemical processes. Different substances have vastly different heat capacities. For example, water has a very high heat capacity, meaning it can absorb or release a large amount of heat with only a small change in its temperature. This property is vital for regulating Earth's climate and for biological systems. In contrast, metals generally have much lower heat capacities, heating up and cooling down relatively quickly.

Heat capacity is typically expressed in units of joules per Kelvin (J/K) or joules per kilogram Kelvin (J/kg·K). When expressed per unit mass, it is called specific heat capacity. When expressed per mole of substance, it is called molar heat capacity. The value of heat capacity can also depend on the conditions under which the measurement is made, such as constant volume or constant pressure.
