Lämpökäsittelytekniikka refers to processes used to alter the physical and sometimes chemical properties of materials through controlled heating and cooling. These techniques are crucial in many industries, including metallurgy, ceramics, and polymer science, to improve material performance, durability, and usability.

In metallurgy, common heat treatment processes include annealing, which softens metals and relieves internal stresses; hardening, which increases strength and wear resistance by forming martensite; tempering, which reduces the brittleness of hardened metals; and normalizing, which refines grain structure and improves mechanical properties. These processes involve carefully controlled heating to specific temperatures followed by controlled cooling rates.

Ceramics also undergo heat treatment, often referred to as firing, to achieve desired properties like hardness, strength, and density. This process involves sintering, where particles fuse together at high temperatures. Polymers can also be heat-treated to modify their crystalline structure, improve dimensional stability, and enhance mechanical properties, though often at lower temperatures than metals or ceramics.

The precise temperature, heating rate, holding time, and cooling rate are critical parameters in heat treatment, as they dictate the resulting microstructure and thus the material's final properties. Understanding and controlling these variables is the core of heat treatment technology.
