Lämpökaapelointi, also known as heat tracing or trace heating, is a system used to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes, tanks, and other industrial equipment. It employs electric heating cables that are attached to the surface of the object to be heated. The primary purpose of heat tracing is to prevent freezing in pipelines in cold climates, to maintain the temperature of viscous fluids for easier pumping, or to compensate for heat loss in insulated pipes.

There are two main types of electric heat tracing cables: self-regulating and constant wattage. Self-regulating cables adjust their heat output based on the ambient temperature and the temperature of the pipe. This is achieved through a special conductive polymer core that varies its resistance. Constant wattage cables, on the other hand, provide a consistent heat output regardless of the surrounding temperature. They are often used for applications requiring precise temperature control or where longer runs are involved.

Installation of heat tracing systems requires careful planning and execution. The heating cables are typically secured to the pipe using specialized tapes or ties, and then covered with insulation to minimize heat loss and protect the cables. Thermostats and control panels are used to regulate the temperature and ensure the system operates efficiently and safely.
