Lämpöjärjestelmät, or heating systems in English, refer to the complex network of components designed to generate, distribute, and regulate heat within a building or space. Their primary function is to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature, especially during colder months, by offsetting heat loss to the external environment. These systems are crucial for residential, commercial, and industrial applications, contributing significantly to occupant comfort, health, and operational efficiency.

The fundamental principle behind most lämpöjärjestelmät involves a heat source that warms a medium, typically water or air. This heated medium is then circulated throughout the building via a distribution network. Common heat sources include boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, and electric resistance heaters. Boilers and furnaces typically burn fossil fuels like natural gas or oil, while heat pumps utilize ambient environmental energy (air, ground, or water) to produce heat. Electric heaters directly convert electrical energy into thermal energy.

The distribution system commonly consists of pipes for hydronic (water-based) systems or ducts for forced-air systems. In hydronic systems, hot water flows through radiators or underfloor heating pipes, releasing heat into the rooms. Forced-air systems use a fan to blow heated air through ducts to various vents. Control of the system is achieved through thermostats, which monitor the ambient temperature and activate or deactivate the heat source and circulation components as needed.
