Lämpöeristykset are materials and methods used to reduce heat transfer between an object or space and its surroundings. The primary purpose of thermal insulation is to prevent heat from escaping in cold environments or entering in hot environments, thereby maintaining a desired temperature and improving energy efficiency. This is crucial for both comfort and cost savings in buildings, industrial processes, and various applications.

The effectiveness of an insulating material is measured by its thermal conductivity, often represented by the 'k' value. Materials with low thermal conductivity are good insulators, as they resist the flow of heat. Common insulating materials include fiberglass, mineral wool, polystyrene foam (EPS and XPS), polyurethane foam, aerogels, and natural materials like cork and cellulose. The choice of insulation depends on factors such as the required thermal resistance (R-value), moisture resistance, fire resistance, cost, and environmental impact.

In building construction, insulation is installed in walls, roofs, floors, and around pipes and windows. Proper insulation significantly reduces heating and cooling energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint. In industrial settings, insulation is used to maintain process temperatures, protect equipment, and prevent heat loss from pipelines and storage tanks. Beyond temperature control, thermal insulation can also play a role in soundproofing and fire safety.
