This temperature difference creates a layer of warm air that acts as a lens, bending light rays and causing objects to appear distorted or wavy. The effect is most commonly observed on hot summer days, particularly in urban areas or near bodies of water.

The scientific explanation for lämmönhukkua involves the principles of refraction and the behavior of light in different mediums. As light travels from the cooler air above to the warmer air below, it bends, or refracts, due to the change in air density. This bending causes the light to follow a curved path, leading to the distorted appearance of objects on the horizon or in the distance.

Lämmönhukkua can also be influenced by other factors, such as humidity and wind. High humidity can exacerbate the effect by increasing the temperature difference between the ground and the air, while wind can disrupt the stable layer of warm air and reduce the intensity of the phenomenon.
