The implementation of lähemusteadete can vary significantly. In a manual approach, public health officials might trace the contacts of an infected person and directly notify those who were in close proximity. More technologically driven approaches involve the use of smartphone applications. These apps often utilize Bluetooth or other short-range wireless technologies to detect when other users' devices are nearby for a sustained period. If one user later reports testing positive for an infectious disease, the system can anonymously alert other users whose devices were detected in close proximity during the infectious period.

The primary goal of lähemusteadete is to enable individuals to take timely precautions, such as self-isolating, getting tested, or monitoring for symptoms.
