Lähdekuvastus

Lähdekuvastus, a Finnish term, translates to "source reflection" or "source image" in English. It refers to a specific visual effect in photography and other image-making processes where the light source itself, or a strong specular highlight, becomes visible within the captured image. This often appears as a bright, distinct shape, such as a circle, starburst, or even a reflection of the camera lens itself.

The appearance of lähdekuvastus is dependent on several factors. The intensity and size of the light source are primary determinants. The angle of incidence of the light relative to the camera and the reflective properties of the surfaces within the scene also play a significant role. In some cases, lens flare, which involves internal reflections within the camera lens elements, can also contribute to or create a form of lähdekuvastus.

While sometimes considered an unwanted artifact, particularly when it obscures details or creates distracting elements, lähdekuvastus can also be intentionally used for artistic effect. Photographers may seek out strong light sources to create visually interesting highlights and add a sense of depth or drama to their images. In certain artistic or technical contexts, understanding and controlling lähdekuvastus is crucial for achieving a desired aesthetic or for accurately interpreting visual data.
