Lysbarkning

Lysbarkning is a term used in Swedish forestry and wood processing to describe a debarking technique that uses controlled heat with softening agents to loosen bark before mechanical removal. The objective is to remove bark efficiently while minimizing damage to the cambium, improving surface quality for downstream processing and reducing waste. The method typically involves softening the bark by steam or warm water under pressure, followed by rapid mechanical separation using rollers, scraping heads, or belt guides. In some versions, mild chemical aids may be used to facilitate bark release; the choice of method depends on wood species, log diameter, and facility design.

Applications include routine debarking of softwood and hardwood logs for pulp and paper production, veneer production, and pre-milling for construction timber. Benefits cited include cleaner surfaces for subsequent processing, reduced bark-related pest risk, and overall improved processing efficiency. Bark that is removed can be used as a by-product for energy, mulch, or biofuel, contributing to waste valorization.

Limitations include variability between species and log conditions, the need for specialized equipment, and higher capital costs relative to simple mechanical debarking. Inconsistent bark moisture, irregular log shapes, or residual bark in the cambial zone can pose challenges.
