Lyotdepolariserare
Lyotdepolariserare, or Lyot depolarizer, is an optical device used to reduce the degree of polarization of light. It consists of a stack of birefringent elements arranged so that the polarization state is scrambled as light propagates through the stack. The result is light that is effectively depolarized when averaged over the beam or spectral band, which is useful for polarimetric measurements and for reducing polarization-related artifacts in optical systems.
Each birefringent plate introduces a polarization-dependent phase delay (retardance). With carefully chosen thicknesses and fixed relative
Typical implementations use common birefringent materials such as quartz. The plates are arranged in a stack
Lyot depolarizers are used in astronomical polarimetry to minimize instrumental polarization, in imaging and spectroscopy instruments
Depolarization is not perfect across all wavelengths and angles, and residual polarization can remain. The device
