Lyara

Lyara is a fictional city-state and cultural center in the northern archipelago of Aelora on the world of Eldoria. It sits on the central island of Vellin and oversees a network of coastal towns along the Lyaran Coast. The city is renowned for its maritime trade, arts, and scholarly institutions.

Lyara arose from medieval trade routes and was formally established by the Lyaran Guild in the 11th century. It grew as a port and market center, benefiting from shipbuilding and regional commerce. Periods of conflict surrounding nearby polities shaped its autonomous traditions and legal framework.

Politically, Lyara operates as a republic led by a City Council of 22 members elected by guilds and property owners, with a Mayor as the chief executive. The council enacts ordinances, while customary law and guild charters regulate trade and daily life. The city maintains a tradition of public assemblies.

The economy centers on the port, logistics, textiles, timber, and spice trade, along with shipbuilding and repair. Cultural life focuses on the Lyaran Festival of Strings and the lyra, a small string instrument prominent in performances. Architectural styles blend classical and maritime influences, and the city hosts the Lyaran Academy and several libraries.

Estimates place Lyara's population at about 150,000. The official language is Lyaran, with Eldoran and other regional dialects spoken among merchants. Education levels are high, and the city is a hub for artisans, scholars, and sailors. Notable landmarks include the Golden Gate, the Lyaran Market, and the Sea Observatory.
