Luvunmerkinnät, meaning "number notations" in Finnish, refers to various systems used to represent numbers. Historically, different cultures developed distinct methods for writing and calculating with numbers. These systems often reflected the available materials, the complexity of the mathematical concepts being expressed, and the societal needs of the time.

The most common luvunmerkinnät today is the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. This system, which originated in India and was later adopted and spread by Arab mathematicians, uses ten digits (0-9) and a positional value system. This means the value of a digit depends on its position within the number. For example, in the number 123, the '1' represents one hundred, the '2' represents twenty, and the '3' represents three. This positional aspect is a key innovation that greatly simplified arithmetic.

Before the widespread adoption of the Hindu-Arabic system, other luvunmerkinnät were prevalent. Roman numerals, for instance, used letters like I, V, X, L, C, D, and M to represent numbers. These were not positional and often required additive and subtractive principles for representation. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic numerals and Babylonian cuneiform numerals are other examples of historical luvunmerkinnät, each with its own unique characteristics and limitations.
