Luustoikäkuvaus, also known as bone age assessment, is a radiological method used to evaluate a child's skeletal maturity. It involves taking an X-ray, typically of the left hand and wrist, which is then compared to standardized reference charts. These charts depict the typical appearance of bones at different ages, showing the progression of ossification centers and the closure of growth plates.

The primary purpose of luustoikäkuvaus is to determine if a child's skeletal development is aligned with their chronological age. Significant deviations can indicate underlying medical conditions affecting growth and development. For example, a child whose bone age is considerably younger than their chronological age might have a growth hormone deficiency or be experiencing constitutional delay of growth and puberty. Conversely, a bone age significantly advanced beyond chronological age could suggest precocious puberty or other hormonal imbalances.

This assessment is a valuable tool for pediatricians and endocrinologists in diagnosing and managing various growth disorders. It helps in predicting a child's final adult height and in planning treatment strategies, such as hormonal therapy, when deemed necessary. The interpretation of the X-ray requires expertise, as subtle differences in bone development can be significant. While the hand-wrist radiograph is the most common method, other views may occasionally be used depending on the clinical situation.
