Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia, located in the south-central part of the country in Lusaka Province. The city sits on the central African plateau at an elevation of about 1,280 meters and experiences a tropical savanna climate with a distinct wet season and a dry season.

Lusaka was founded in 1905 as a railway town by the British South Africa Company and named after a local chief, Lusaka. It became the capital of the protectorate of Northern Rhodesia in 1935 and remained the capital after independence in 1964.

With about two million residents in its metropolitan area, Lusaka is the political and economic heart of Zambia. It hosts most government ministries and offices, along with finance, media, and service sector firms, making it a major transport and logistics hub for central Zambia.

The city is home to the University of Zambia and several other higher education institutions, and it features cultural sites such as the Lusaka National Museum and the Freedom Statue on Independence Avenue.

Lusaka is served by Kenneth Kaunda International Airport and a network of paved roads and rail links that connect it with the Copperbelt and other parts of the country.
