Luottotarkastuksia

Luottotarkastuksia is a Finnish term referring to background checks that assess an individual's creditworthiness and financial reliability. Such checks are commonly used by banks, leasing companies, landlords, and, in certain sectors, employers before extending credit, leasing, or hiring.

The primary data sources for a luottotarkastus include the Finnish Credit Information Center (Luottotietojärjestelmä), court registers (Suurten hallintopäätösten tietokanta), and public financial institutions. Credit bureaus compile information on outstanding loans, payment histories, defaults, and public statements. In Finland, these agencies must comply with the Act on Administrative Data Systems and the Personal Data Act, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.

During a credit check, the applicant’s name and identification number are verified. The resulting report lists all registered debts, their status (current, overdue, or paid), and any negative entries such as bankruptcies or court judgments. This report helps lenders assess risk and determine terms such as interest rates or credit limits.

Consumers have rights to access their own luottotarkastus data. Under Finnish law, individuals can request a copy of their report and correct inaccuracies. In 2023, a new regulation introduced a 72‑hour deadline for data correction, promoting timely updates.

While common in financial services, luottotarkastuksia in employment contexts are regulated more strictly. Employers may conduct credit checks only with explicit consent and when the job duties expose the candidate to financial responsibilities. Misuse can lead to fines and legal action.
