Luonnonliima

Luonnonliima refers to adhesives derived from natural sources, as opposed to synthetic alternatives. These glues have been used for millennia by humans and are still relevant in various applications today.

Common sources for natural glues include animal products and plant-based materials. Animal-based glues, often called hide glue or bone glue, are traditionally made by boiling animal hides, bones, or connective tissues. This process extracts collagen, which, when dried and rehydrated, forms a strong adhesive. These glues are known for their reversibility and good bonding strength, particularly with wood.

Plant-based natural glues can be derived from starches, sugars, and proteins found in various plants. For example, starches from grains or tubers can be cooked with water to create a paste-like adhesive, often used for paper and cardboard. Natural gums, such as gum arabic from acacia trees or tragacanth gum, are also employed as adhesives, especially in food products and art supplies. Resins from trees, like pine resin, have also historically been used for their sticky properties.

The use of luonnonliima has seen a resurgence due to growing interest in sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. They are often biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact compared to many synthetic glues, which can be petroleum-based and harder to dispose of. While synthetic adhesives often offer superior water resistance and faster drying times, natural glues remain valuable for their eco-friendliness, reversibility, and historical significance in crafts, woodworking, and conservation.
