Typical luokkatilat contain seating arranged for instruction, a whiteboard or smartboard, and access to writing surfaces for students. Modern rooms usually include adjustable furniture for different teaching styles, good acoustics, natural light, and reliable heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They are equipped with information and communications technology infrastructure, including network access, projectors or interactive displays, and sufficient electrical outlets for devices.

Accessibility and safety considerations are central to planning luokkatilat. This includes barrier-free access, adjustable furniture to accommodate pupils with diverse needs, clear paths, appropriate emergency exits, and compliance with fire and safety regulations. Maintenance and routine checks cover ventilation, lighting, and technology.

In recent decades, there has been a shift toward flexible and adaptable luokkatilat that support collaborative learning, project-based work, and technology-enhanced teaching.
