Luokitteleminen is the Finnish term for classification, a process by which entities are sorted into categories based on shared characteristics. It is a foundational concept used in many disciplines, from biology and library science to data analysis and artificial intelligence. The practice allows researchers and practitioners to impose structure on complex information, making it easier to study, organize, and retrieve.

In biological taxonomy, luokitteleminen follows a nested hierarchy that traces the evolutionary relationships among organisms. Starting with broad ranks such as kingdom and phylum, the system descends to more specific levels like genus and species. This hierarchical method, rooted in the work of Carl Linnaeus, enables clear identification and comparison across the natural world. Similar hierarchical approaches are employed in classification systems for chemicals, geological formations, and fungi.

Digital information requires different classification strategies. In library science, the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress system group books by subject area, using a standardized coding scheme. In computer science, classification algorithms—such as decision trees, support vector machines, and neural networks—learn from labeled data to predict the category of new instances.
