Lungeninfektion, also known as a lung infection, is a general term for an infection that affects the lungs. These infections can be caused by various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The most common types of lung infections are pneumonia and bronchitis. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus. Bronchitis, on the other hand, is an inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from your lungs.

Symptoms of a lung infection can vary depending on the cause and severity but often include cough, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms may include chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In some cases, especially in young children and the elderly, lung infections can lead to serious complications.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests such as a chest X-ray or CT scan. Laboratory tests, like sputum cultures, may also be performed to identify the specific pathogen responsible for the infection. Treatment for lung infections depends on the cause. Bacterial infections are usually treated with antibiotics, while viral infections may be managed with antiviral medications or supportive care. Fungal infections require antifungal drugs. Rest, hydration, and pain relief are often recommended as part of the treatment plan. Prevention strategies include vaccinations, such as the flu and pneumococcal vaccines, and good hygiene practices.
