Lumipyöräily, also known as fat biking or snow biking, is a recreational activity that involves riding bicycles equipped with extra-wide tires over snow-covered terrain. These oversized tires, typically ranging from 3.8 to 5 inches (9.7 to 12.7 cm) in width, provide significantly increased flotation and traction, allowing cyclists to navigate soft snow where a standard bicycle would sink.

The origins of lumipyöräily can be traced back to Alaska in the late 20th century, where it emerged as a way to extend the cycling season into winter. It has since gained popularity worldwide, particularly in regions with cold climates and abundant snowfall. Specialized fat bikes are designed with wider frames to accommodate the large tires and often feature robust components to withstand harsh winter conditions.

Riding a fat bike typically requires less specialized skill than some other snow sports, though balance and momentum are key. The lower tire pressure, often as low as 5-10 psi, contributes to a smoother ride and better grip on snow. Lumipyöräily can be enjoyed on groomed trails, like those used for cross-country skiing, or on ungroomed backcountry snow. It offers a unique way to experience winter landscapes and stay active during colder months. Many outdoor recreation areas now offer designated fat biking trails or allow fat bikes on multi-use winter paths.
