Lumikoneisiin, often translated as "snow machines" or "snowmakers," are devices designed to artificially create snow. These machines are crucial for winter sports resorts to maintain skiable surfaces during periods of insufficient natural snowfall. They operate by atomizing water and mixing it with compressed air, which is then expelled into the atmosphere. The fine water droplets, when exposed to cold air, rapidly freeze and form snow crystals.

The effectiveness of lumikoneisiin is dependent on ambient temperature and humidity. The colder and drier the air, the more efficient the snowmaking process. Modern snow machines come in various designs, including fan guns and air/water guns. Fan guns use a large fan to propel the atomized water mixture further and create a wider snow curtain, while air/water guns rely on air pressure to eject the water.

The water used for snowmaking is typically sourced from reservoirs, lakes, or rivers and is pumped to the snow guns. The process requires significant amounts of water and energy. Snowmaking operations are carefully managed by resorts to optimize snow production, considering weather forecasts and piste conditions. The quality of the artificial snow can vary, often being denser and icier than natural snow, which can affect skiing and snowboarding experiences.
